BCC and LCC: National Scenic Byway Study

Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons are being considered for National Scenic Byway status. If accepted, the canyons will receive increased funding from the federal government for area projects, such as new parking areas, new trails, kiosks and interpretive displays.

As part of the submission process, various canyon stakeholders participated in a Scenic Byway Study, organized by the Town of Alta and the U.S. Forest Service. Climbers are seen as an important user group of the canyons. The SLCA, the primary grassroots climbing organization, was chosen to represent them in the study process. Among the proposals being examined are plans to develop a Grist Mill Climbing Trailhead, formalize climbing trails around Storm Mountain, reconfigure roadside and designated parking lots, and provide additional public transit stops throughout the canyons.

The results of the study are summarized in the draft Corridor Management Plan (CMP). If the canyons receive Scenic Byway designation, the next step is the formation of a permanent Scenic Byways Committee, on which the SLCA will be represented. This committee will steer the prioritization and implementation of various parts of the CMP.

The SLCA will continue to keep you up to date on developments regarding National Scenic Byway status of the canyons. If you have any questions or would like to be involved, please don't hesitate to contact us.
