THE CHALLENGE Description

Overview:

Dirtbag Derby is a unique single-day rope climbing competition that pays homage to the free-spirited dirtbag lifestyle. Set against the backdrop of the Wasatch Front, this event not only challenges climbers on the ropes but also puts their grit and resourcefulness to the test with additional challenges for bonus points. As teams of two your objective is to aquire as many points as possible before the close of the competition (8pm).

This is a fundraiser for the SLCA and ALL funds will be donated back to Wasatch Climbing

When

Saturday: June 1st (8am-7:00pm)

HOW

Scorecards will be emailed to you on the morning of the competition, June 1st. You'll use this scorecard to track your and your teammates' points. Please return the completed scorecards by 7:00pm. You can email them to events@saltlakeclimbers.org or drop them off at Black Diamond Headquarters (2092 East 3900 South Salt Lake City, Utah 84124).

Please note that scorecards will not be accepted after 7pm.

Climbing Challenge

Rules:

  • Sport/ Trad Routes only (unless otherwise specified in bonus point section)

  • Routes must be red pointed to count (no falls, or hangs, or aiding of any kind, and the anchor must be clipped)

  • Only outdoor routes count

  • Point value are assigned to each grade

  • Stick Clips are allowed for safety reasons

  • TEAMS: Teams consist of two climbers. There are no “solo” climbers, or solo awards or solo anything. Team members will belay each other, no outside help with belaying. Teams will need to come up with a unique (and appropriate) name. If not, a default team name will be assigned by the SLCA.

  • SCORING: Each team will keep track of its climbed routes and laps, via the honor system. Team members do not have to climb the same routes. Individual scores will be tallied as a team total.

  • Scorecards will not be accepted after 7pm


POINT SYSTEM

  • 5.5-5.7 = POINTS - 50

  • 5.8 =  POINTS - 70

  • 5.9 = POINTS - 90

  • 5.10 A/B = POINTS - 110

  • 5.10 C/D =  POINTS - 130

  • 5.11 A/B =  POINTS - 150

  • 5.11 C/D =  POINTS - 170

  • 5.12 A =  POINTS  - 190

  • 5.12 B = POINTS  - 210

  • 5.12 C = POINTS  - 230

  • 5.12 D+ = POINTS  - 250

Dirtbag Challenges

  • Trash Cleanup Blitz = 50 points (The team that collects the most trash from the ground will win these points)

  • WAG bag handout = 30 points (Give out at least 3 wags to strangers at the crag)

  • Barefoot Bouldering Challenge (one time only) = 50 points

  • Hitch hiking to the crag = 30 points

  • Trail Run 3 miles = 150 points

  • Mountain Bike 5 miles = 150 points

  • Bike to the Crag = 150 points 

  • Take the Bus to the Crag = 75 points 

  • Fill out our Anchor/Bolt Observation Form = 50 points 

  • Carpool to the crag = 50 points

  • The most dirtbag way of recording your score = 50 points

  • SLCA Staff Fav Routes: Find the SLCA patch on climbing routes = 150 points EACH

  • Pull some weeds - invasive species (like Myrtle Spurge). For smaller populations, hand pulling can be effective. WEAR GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION. Myrtle Spurge is an escaped ornamental plant that spreads aggressively through open spaces and is prohibited in Utah. Native to Eurasia, myrtle spurge is a herbaceous perennial in the Euphorbiaceae with a widespread distribution in the Wasatch Front. Seeds can be flung 15 feet, and vegetation contains a toxic, milky sap. When stems are broken, toxic milky sap is released. = 100 points

* This event is based on the honor code. Only mark a completed climb if you did the climb yourself. Please remember to have good crag etiquette.
