Advocacy: USDS 2001 Roadless Rule Comment

The Salt Lake Climbers Alliance recently submitted comments opposing the proposed rescission of the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. Our comments focused on what roadless landscapes mean to climbing in the Wasatch and across Utah. A climbing area is more than the cliff itself—it is the approach through the forest, the quiet, the wildlife, the viewshed, the history, and the undeveloped landscape surrounding it. These places are part of the climbing resource and part of what makes climbing in the Wasatch so special.

SLCA will continue to advocate for the landscapes where we climb while working collaboratively with land managers and partners to address recreation and stewardship. We believe active management and protecting roadless character do not have to be competing objectives. As climbers, we have a responsibility to speak up for not only the routes we climb, but the landscapes that make those experiences possible.
