Celebrate Climbing History in the Wasatch

On August 5, 2024, Little Cottonwood Canyon became America’s first recreational climbing area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition honors decades of advocacy and celebrates the legacy of climbing in the Wasatch—a legacy that lives on in every pitch, every belay, and every climber who ties in here today.

This designation elevates the importance of protecting and preserving this canyon’s unique climbing landscapes for future generations. While climbing evolves, the routes and passion for this place remain unchanged.

About the Hike

Join the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance for a 1.5-hour interpretive walking tour of the Alpenbock Loop—the historic heart of Wasatch climbing. This 1.5-mile loop explores the pioneering climbs of the 1960s and the conservation values that continue to define Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Led by SLCA staff, the tour invites you to reflect on the intersection of outdoor recreation, environmental ethics, and cultural preservation in one of America’s most iconic climbing destinations. Whether you’re a climber, history buff, or curious explorer, this is a rare opportunity to walk in the footsteps of climbing history.
