Purge the Spurge Recap with Cottonwood Canyons Foundation
We are so grateful that the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation (CCF) joined our May, 2025 Adopt a Crag at the Gate Buttress! With the help of volunteers, their plants crew pulled 50 large bags of myrtle spurge out of the Gate Buttress on the approach to The Fin!!!
What Is Myrtle Spurge and Why Remove It?
Myrtle spurge ( Euphorbia myrsinites ) is a prohibited, invasive ornamental plant that escapes cultivation and aggressively establishes on open hillsides and canyon slopes along the Wasatch Front. It outcompetes native wildflowers, reduces forage for pollinators and wildlife, and can be particularly harmful near watershed areas where herbicide use is restricted.
CCF organizes various stewardship activities, including invasive weed removal, trail maintenance, and educational programs. Myrtle spurge, an invasive plant that spreads rapidly and threatens native habitats, is a focus of their weed mitigation efforts.
