Alpenbock Loop: Hiking Through History

The Salt Lake Climbers Alliance (SLCA), in partnership with the Utah Historical Society, will host the Alpenbock Loop Historical Hike on October 11, 18, and 25, 2025, from 10:00–11:30 AM. Hikes begin at the Little Cottonwood Canyon Park & Ride in Sandy.

On August 5, 2024, Little Cottonwood Canyon became America’s first recreational climbing area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition honors decades of advocacy and celebrates the legacy of climbing in the Wasatch—a legacy that lives on in every pitch, every belay, and every climber who ties in here today.

This designation elevates the importance of protecting and preserving this canyon’s unique climbing landscapes for future generations. While climbing evolves, the routes and passion for this place remain unchanged.

This 1.5-mile guided walk highlights pioneering routes of the 1960s and explores the intersection of climbing, conservation, and culture in one of the nation’s most iconic climbing areas.

Know Before You Go: The hike is moderate with rocky terrain; sturdy shoes, water, and layers recommended. Not advised for very young children or those with balance issues.
