Stewardship: Fat Grips Boulder & Glizzy’s at the gate event

Over two days, May 13–14, 2026, the SLCA teamed up with KAYA to improve the landing beneath the popular boulder problem Fat Grips. Perched high on a steep sandy slope, the landing had developed a bit of a reputation over the years — if your crash pad didn’t catch you, gravity would happily take over and send both climber and pad sliding downhill together.

The goal of the project was to remove the old retaining wall and replace it with a more durable rock wall system. By building up the landing area, the crew was able to create a flatter, more stable surface for climbers and pads alike.

Over the course of the two-day effort, more than 25 volunteers showed up to help, contributing over 65 hours of work to improve the landing. While a little work still remains, the area is already in much better condition than before. Huge thanks to KAYA for helping rally the community and providing support for this stewardship event!

Following the successful stewardship work at Fat Grips, on May 14th, KAYA, The Gear Room and SLCA hosted a small gathering at the Gate Boulders to bring together the climbing community and thank those who came out to volunteer. Our partners at The Gear Room brought 60 + hot dogs, buns and condiments to enjoy among the boulders. Yes, they carried a grill up to the bouldering area. Climbers were able to hang out, eat and boulder for the evening!

SLCA had an opportunity drawing with awesome gear from our Gear Room and Kaya partners.

Once it got dark (enough) SLCA screened The Story Behind Little Cottonwood Canyon by Mike Call and the teaser trailer for the Alpenbock Film premiering this summer.

Thank you to everyone who came out for this great community and stewardship event!
