Anchors: Rock Canyon
During the week of May 19, 2026, the anchor crew headed down to the Super Bowl and Bad Bananas areas of Rock Canyon for some much-needed anchor maintenance. Located near the mouth of the canyon, these south-facing cliffs sit high above the valley and offer excellent winter sport climbing on sunny days. The area is also home to unique, grainy quartzite that gradually transitions into more consolidated quartzite higher on the cliff.
Over the course of the week, the crew replaced bolts on 21 routes, covering nearly all of the Super Bowl Wall and most of first pitches of Bad Bananas. Everything to climber’s left of the route Bad Bananas remains untouched and has not yet been maintained. To our surprise, we encountered far more heavily corroded hardware than expected. Many of the existing bolts consisted of mixed metals and were severely rusted. Multiple stud bolts snapped while we were simply loosening the nuts, and we also found several concrete screws from a previous rebolting effort in Bad Bananas.
Over the course of four days, the crew replaced over 160 bolts. All fixed anchors replaced during this project were upgraded with Team Tough Cross Over Bolts using either MKT EP800 epoxy or DeWalt AC100 adhesive. All routes were equipped with mussy hooks to allow for easier and safer lowering.
The SLCA’s Fixed Anchor Maintenance Program could not exist without the support of the local climbing community. By attending our Annual Fundraiser, you are supporting programs like this. Proceeds go directly back into maintaining fixed anchors, climbing access trails and advocating for Wasatch climbing.
