Maple Canyon Anchor Maintenance Recap

October 10/22 - 15/22

Maple Canyon Recap

Recap by Anchor Maintenance Coordinator, Andrew Brodhead

Maple Canyon continues to be the gift that keeps giving!  As it transitions into full fall colors, the temperatures continue to be optimal for sending the long standing project.  The temperatures also continue to be optimal for continued anchor maintenance.  The week of October 10th, the Anchor Maintenance Crew visited the Damascus Gate at Right Fork.  This Northeastern crag is home to some excellent 5.12s as climbers make their way to the famous Pipe Dream.

Most of the routes at the crag saw some type of upgrade and or maintenance. The only routes not visited were on both flanks of the crag. Routes like 51 Scoops and Braintree, in the lower tier, need much love due to their bad bolts and fractured rock surrounding these bolts. Most of the routes at the lower tier now have Fixe stainless steel glue ins for both lead bolts and anchors.

The upper tear saw the majority of the maintenance for the week. Most of the classics were in good contention but saw an anchor upgrade. Welcome Back Cobble, the crags only 5.12d, saw a full upgrade. Hopefully this route will now see more ascents due to its bolt upgrades.

Rock climbing is an inherently dangerous activity and we encourage anyone who participates to obtain the appropriate education and training in order to minimize accidents.  We also encourage participants to consult resources including but not limited to guiding outfitters, SAR, Utah Avalanche Center, ranger stations, and weather reports. Nevertheless and although tragic, accidents can happen even when the participants have the proper training and have consulted authorities on conditions. Participants in outdoor climbing are assuming a risk, just as they do in skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, or other outdoor activities. Anchors once maintained by the SLCA are not guaranteed to be in the same state or condition as when they were maintained.
