Rebolt the Compound Update: Week 1 of 2

This past month, we have had an ongoing fundraiser to do a full revamp of The Compound, one of Maple Canyons steepest crags. Developed over 21 years ago, the aging hardware is no longer suitable for the steep cobble matrix. The Compound is unique as it has a multitude of different bands of matrix: some bullet hard and some of soft sandstone. The thinner, shorter bolts of 20 years ago are not suitable for the tensile forces it sees in such steep terrain. For this reason along with the popularity of the crag, the goal was to replace most, if not all the routes at The Compound.

During the first week of work, our Anchor Maintenance Crew was able to replace 154 bolts and maintain 30 bolts. Seventeen routes were visited during the first week of work. Everything climbers left of the route Cracker was visited by our Anchor Maintenance Crew. Three routes: Neptune Spears, Defcon 1 and Fat Lady were not replaced but maintained by the crew. This was due to a mix of reasons: bolts were 1/2’’ stud bolts and or fully stainless steel bolts and hangers. So far we have raised $3,844.00 of our total goal of $15,000.00

Our Anchor Crew will be heading back down to Maple Canyon to finish up Rebolting The Compound during October 9th - 13th. If you want to track our progress and see what routes we are currently working on, head over to our Rebolt The Compound page. While there, don’t forget to donate to this great project!

A special thanks to the Division of Outdoor Recreation, Athletic Brewing Two for the Trails Grant, and all the individuals who have already donated to this project! We are extremely grateful for your contribution to sustainable anchors and safe climbing.
