SLCA On Air: Protect Our Past

Climbing in Utah is more than recreation—it’s living history. The rocks we climb are shaped not only by geology, but by the people, stories, and stewardship that came before us.

In a recent episode of the Utah State Historic Preservation Office’s Utah Archaeology Podcast: Beyond the 50-Year Rule, Salt Lake Climbers Alliance’s Executive Director joined the conversation to discuss why protecting climbing heritage is essential to sustaining access in the Wasatch.

“We are part of the history of the places we climb—let’s make it a good one. Protect Our Past reminds us that our actions today shape what’s worth protecting tomorrow.” — Julia Geisler, Executive Director, Salt Lake Climbers Alliance

From the Alpenbock Club’s earliest ascents to climbers tying in on those same routes today, Utah’s climbing areas remain living cultural landscapes. SLCA’s work recognizes these places as shared heritage—and emphasizes that thoughtful stewardship is what keeps them open, safe, and respected for future generations.
