Anchor Maintenance: Great White Icicle Area - LCC
During the week of June 30 – July 3, 2025, the Anchor Maintenance Crew focused on replacing aging climbing hardware at the Great White Icicle area in Little Cottonwood Canyon. This zone is a great option for shade during the early and late summer months and features a mix of enjoyable single-pitch and multi-pitch routes, most notably Daddy Long Legs (5.9) and River’s Edge (5.10b).
A major focus of the trip was replacing the rusty ¼” stud bolts on A Chorus Line (5.11b), a two-pitch extension of Daddy Long Legs. If relocated to the Gate Buttress, this route would easily be considered a Little Cottonwood classic. The bolts here were some of the worst the crew has encountered in quite a while.
While on site, we also worked on Evening Falls (5.10a), Tap N Stance (5.11a), Plain Klipper, Astair (5.12a), and a few others.
While working in this zone, we came across a particularly dangerous ⅜” PB+ bolt—a type of hardware we’ve flagged before as subpar. Several of Astair’s original bolts had been replaced with these. Fortunately, we had the right tooling with us, which allowed us to remove and upgrade them without needing to drill extra holes.
